Demokraci odzyskali kontrolę nad Senatem USA po wtorkowych wyborach połówkowych, czyli midterms. Odbili republikanom sześć mandatów, m.in. w Teksasie i Karolinie Południowej.

What happened in the US elections? The news in simple English

On Tuesday, 3 November, Americans voted in the midterm elections. These elections happen in the middle of a president’s four-year term. This year voters chose all 435 members of the House of Representatives, 35 senators and 36 state governors.

The Democrats won control of the Senate. Before the vote, the Republicans had 53 seats and the Democrats had 47. The Democrats flipped six Republican seats: in Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa and Kansas. In Kansas, it was their first Senate win in 94 years.

Texas was a big surprise. James Talarico, a Democrat, defeated Ken Paxton, a candidate who had support from President Donald Trump. In Georgia, the Democratic senator Jon Ossoff kept his seat.

The result in the House of Representatives is not official yet. The AP news agency says it is too early to call, but the Democrats have already flipped seven seats there. Some US media, for example Bloomberg, report projections that the Democrats will have a majority in the House too.

Why did so many people vote for the Democrats? In a big AP survey, about two-thirds of voters said that Trump’s policies made the economy worse. Many people are unhappy about high prices.

The new Congress will start work in January 2027. If the Democrats control both parts of Congress, it will be much harder for Trump to pass new laws. Trump says he will use his veto to stop Democratic plans.
