Poland’s parliament, the Sejm, has voted for a night ban on alcohol sales. If the law starts as planned, from 1 January 2027 you will not be able to buy beer, wine or vodka in a shop or at a petrol station between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The ban is only for alcohol that people take away. You can still order a drink in a restaurant or a bar at night. Local councils can make the ban longer: they can start it at 9 p.m. or end it at 9 a.m.
The law also brings other changes. Alcohol advertising will be banned, and this includes beer. A shop assistant must ask for an ID card if a customer looks young. If the customer cannot show ID, the shop must refuse the sale. Small bottles up to 300 ml can only be made of glass or metal.
Many cities already have their own night bans, for example Warsaw. Now the rule may cover the whole country. The law still needs to pass the Senate and the President. An expert from the national addiction centre (KCPU) warned that the rules on online sales may need EU approval, and this could delay the law.
