The news in simple English
A big climate meeting starts this week. On Monday, 9 November, the United Nations climate conference COP31 opens in Antalya, a seaside city in Türkiye. It will last until 20 November.
This year two countries share the work. Türkiye is the host. Its minister Murat Kurum is the COP31 President. Australia leads the negotiations – the difficult talks about the final texts. The Australian minister Chris Bowen has this job.
World leaders will speak on 11 and 12 November. Some big countries, like China and India, are not sending their top leaders, says Climate Home News.
What will countries talk about? There are three main topics:
- Fossil fuels. On 3 November, a voluntary plan to move away from coal, oil and gas was published. It has three stages until 2033. Some countries want to mention it in the final decision. Oil and gas producers are against it.
- Electricity. Today electricity is about 23–24% of all the energy the world uses. A new voluntary pledge wants 35% by 2035.
- Money for adaptation. Poorer countries need help to prepare for floods, heat and droughts. A UN report says the planned money, $85–120 billion a year, is much less than the $305 billion that is needed.
There is also bad news about temperature. The UN now accepts that the world will go above the 1.5°C limit from the Paris Agreement. In the best case, warming may peak at 1.7–1.8°C around the middle of the century.
